Luigi Boccherini (1743–1805) was an Italian cellist and composer, best known for his contributions to chamber music. Born in Lucca, Tuscany, he studied in Rome before touring Europe as a performer. He eventually settled in Spain, where he served as a court composer and became associated with the Spanish aristocracy.

His Passa Cale from Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid (Night Music of the Streets of Madrid), Op. 30 No. 6 (G. 324) achieved notoriety after making an appearance in the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. ‘Passa calle’ in Spanish means to pass along the street. La Musica Notturna di Madrid was not published till after Boccherini’s death. He had told his publisher: ‘The piece is absolutely useless, even ridiculous, outside Spain, because the audience can’t hope to understand its significance, nor the performers to play it as it should be played.’

Another well-known piece by Boccherini is his Minuet from String Quintet in E Major, Op. 11, No. 5 (G 275), which I have arranged for Cello and Piano.
